Tea Party Triumphs in Rural Colorado
By KIRK JOHNSON
DENVER — Scott Tipton, a Republican businessman backed by the Tea Party movement, defeated a three-term Democrat incumbent, Representative John Salazar, in Colorado’s Third Congressional District.

The race drew national attention, and millions of dollars in outside money, partly for family reasons. Mr. Salazar, the older brother of Ken Salazar, the United States secretary of the interior, said he believed he was challenged partly because his loss would particularly embarrass the Obama administration.

Mr. Tipton, 53, told voters that the race about choosing a candidate who was an independent voice for residents of the sprawling rural district. He portrayed Mr. Salazar as captive to the Democratic majority in Washington and to Speaker Nancy Pelosi in particular, and he cited Mr. Salazar’s votes for the health care overhaul and the economic stimulus package.

Mr. Salazar defended both votes vigorously, saying the district, which has some of the highest poverty rates in Colorado, would benefit from the health care plan.

The district includes most of western Colorado and has a mix of Republican ranching communities, liberal areas like Aspen and culturally conservative cities like Pueblo that have large Hispanic populations and have historically supported Democrats. Pueblo’s votes this year were split.
